COURSE A
A1. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Takasago Works
Takasago Machinery Works is located approximately 50 km in west from Kobe, and manufactures a variety of solutions, including high performance gas turbines, steam turbines, and other related products. In addition, adjacent Research and Innovation Center develops the state-of-the-art technology. Above all, the state-of-the-art gas turbines have achieved the world’s largest capacity and highest efficiency.
A2. Takasago Hydrogen Park
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), will establish a Takasago Hydrogen Park, the world’s first center for validation of hydrogen-related technologies, from hydrogen production to power generation. The center will be co-located at the gas turbine development and manufacturing facility of MHI’s Takasago Machinery Works in Hyogo Prefecture, to support the commercialization of hydrogen gas turbines using hydrogen as fuel. The Takasago Hydrogen Park will be successively expanded and developed going forward. Mitsubishi Power has already announced its 30% hydrogen co-firing for large frame gas turbines and will use Takasago Hydrogen Park to commercialize small and large frame gas turbines on a path to 100% hydrogen firing starting in 2025.
A4. Himeji Castle
National Treasure, Himeji Castle is the first site in Japan to be registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. The iconic landmark sits atop a hill that’s visible from JR Himeji Station, an impressive sight as soon as you arrive to Himeji. Renowned for its original, 400-year-old structure, the magnificent white castle keep has been likened to an egret taking flight, earning it the nickname “White Egret Castle.” For history buffs and casual castle observers alike, this Himeji icon is an experience.
COURSE B
B1. Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Akashi Works
The Akashi Works is one of Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ main production facilities, producing industrial gas turbines, jet engines, motorcycles, and industrial robots. The company’s basic research and information system departments are also located here. In this tour, facilities of industrial gas turbine and research facilities for carbon neutral will be introduced.
B2. Kobe hydrogen cogeneration system
At Kobe hydrogen cogeneration system (CGS), a 1.7MW gas turbine fueled by 100% hydrogen has been operated to verify one of the most effective utilizations of hydrogen energy. In 2018, the world’s first demonstration operation was successfully completed while providing both heat and power derived from hydrogen to public facilities on Kobe Port Island. In 2020, 100% hydrogen operation with dry-low-emission combustor was achieved for the first in the world.
B3. HySTRA Liquefied Hydrogen Receiving Terminal
HySTRA is the association working towards creating a CO₂ free hydrogen energy supply chain comprised of hydrogen production effectively utilizing brown coal, transportation, storage and utilization of hydrogen, and establishing and demonstrating the technologies to commercialize the supply chain around 2030. At Liquefied Hydrogen Receiving Terminal located in the Kobe Airport Island, liquefied hydrogen from Australia is unload from the carrier into the storage tank , whilst maintaining a temperature of -253℃. This is the first new energy terminal in Japan.
* These projects (B2 and B3) are conducted in a grant program of NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization).
